"The reaction that I got from people was 'Wow!'" says O'Brien, 37. "Flowers really bring a lot of happiness to people, whether it's a single calla lily or a huge bouquet of feathered tulips. For me, it's an inner calling."
So much so that last August, O'Brien, a product development manager in fashion, started Beautiful Blooms, a floral design company based in Yardley, Pa. But first, she took flower arranging classes at Parsons School of Design and, more recently, at the Jane Packer Flower School at the Terence Conran Shop.
"At Jane Packer, you use top-of-the-line flowers and it's a very modern and updated look," she explains. "I learned about wiring bouquets and bridal techniques. One day, I created a tiara out of silver wire strung with hyacinth florets and beads. It was so beautiful."
