Riverton
Country Club is one of the six Donald Ross golf courses
still operating in New Jersey.
The
decision to create a golf club in Riverton was made
in 1899 by a group of Quaker businessmen. For 17 years,
beginning in 1900, Riverton Country Club had a 9-hole
course on a tract of 50 acres that today contains the
8th through 14th holes.
In
1916, the club purchased the land that now contains
holes 1 through 7 and 15 through 18 and hired Donald
Ross, rated the best golf architect in the game's history,
to build an 18-hole course.
That course, which is the one in play today, opened
the weekend of July 4, 1917.
In
doing his work, Ross kept only one original hole (the
current 14th ) and retained one additional green, the
current 8th The remainder of the course is his design
and the club is committed to maintain all the Donald
Ross concepts in any future work performed on the course.
Since
1899, the club's land has been in two townships, Riverton
and Cinnaminson. The original clubhouse was in Riverton.
In 1958, a new clubhouse
was built in the current location on the Cinnaminson
side. The clubhouse was completely rebuilt and substantially
expanded in 2000 at a cost of about $5 million.
With
a golf course designed by the game's best architect,
a rich and interesting history,
a new clubhouse, tennis
courts, bowling
alleys, pools,
elegant dining
and a growing membership,
Riverton is poised to have its best years in the dawn
of a new millennium.
